Practice,¹ Practice,² Practice ³

Practice,¹ Practice,² Practice ³ presents exemplary undergraduate work at the USC School of Architecture. Design projects by BArch, BSAS, and BSAIT students highlight how USC’s undergraduate curricula develop exceptional thinkers and makers through advancing cycles of creative activity and innovation. Practice, as it is explored through this survey, is simultaneously an iterative mode of learning, a disciplined approach to working, and an ever-evolving ethic toward how one moves through and contributes to society.

The galleries trace students’ progression through a core educational sequence that begins with an introduction to fundamental design principles and culminates with comprehensive and self-directed projects. Each semester prompts the exercising and, consequently, a reconsideration of concepts and skills in new contexts with added complexities. The works on display demonstrate process and progress toward various proficiencies, and most importantly evolve to converge around urgent topics that define our time: climate resilience, community empowerment, environmental justice, and more.

¹ a tangible application of an idea (as when a theory is put to practice)

² repetition that advances toward expertise (like how practice makes perfect)

³ how one participates in society (as in a code of practice)
